08:30-09:30Arrival and registration. Coffee/tea, fruit, nuts, water.
09:30-09:40Welcome by organizers.
09:40-10:20Masterclass: What are contrails, how do they impact the climate, and what can be done to stop them from warming the climate?Imperial College London is one of the world’s most active scientific institutions when it comes to contrails and non-CO2 from aviation. Professor Marc Stettler will lead us through the basics of contrails, their climate impact, and ways to mitigate them while also mentioning some of the newer research results from him and his colleagues.
Marc Stettler, Professor of Transport and Environment, Imperial College London
10:20-10:40Break, networking. Smoothie, juice, green snacks, house-made bread with Danish cheeses, coffee/tea.
10:40-11:35Presentation: Airlines’ and partners’ experience with contrail mitigation. Airlines and tech companies are testing contrail avoidance in simulations and real-life trials. This session will give you a quick idea of the results, challenges, and learnings from these experiences.
12.15-13:00Panel Discussion: Should we wait for more data and certainty in contrail prediction and climate impact, or can we learn to deal with uncertainty? The contrail prediction models are far from perfect and there is a large uncertainty span when it comes to precisely how big the climate impact of contrails is. Should we wait for perfect science, or can we start doing something now?
Carlos López de la Osa, Sustainable Aviation Manager, T&E
Marc Stettler, Professor of Transport and Environment, Imperial College London
Paul Hodgson, Director AIA, University of Cambridge
Sebnem Erzan, Head of Flights, Transport and Travel Sustainability, Global Partnerships, Google
Vincent de Haes, Senior Sustainable Aviation Consultant, to70 (moderator)
13:00-14:00Lunch, networking. The head chef’s selection. Lunch made from fresh, seasonal produce and quality ingredients.
14:00-14:30Presentation: What does contrail management cost? Many climate solutions are incredibly expensive, but contrail avoidance seems to be an exception, even though expenses include extra fuel use to avoid contrail areas, new humidity sensors on planes, better satellites to detect contrails, and much more. Roland Berger and T&E present their new research and give us an idea of how much a plane ticket would cost in a future where contrail avoidance is implemented.
14:30-15:40Panel Discussion: Carrot or stick – incentives for contrail management. The EU just introduced mandatory monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of contrail warming from airlines. Will the new MRV rules make a difference, or do we need voluntary action?
Andrew Chen, Principal, Aviation Decarbonization, RMI
Anna Stratton, Associate Director Aviation, ClimateWorks Foundation
Dimitar Nikov, Policy Officer, DG Clima, European Commission
Jan Lueckhof, Senior Expert Sustainable Aviation, Deutsche Post DHL Group
Nuala Doyle, Policy Officer, Opportunity Green
Matteo Mirolo, Head of Policy and Strategy Contrails, Breakthrough Energy (moderator)
15:40-15:55Break, networking. A selection of healthy and sweet snacks, coffee/tea.
15:55-16:35Presentation: Operation Blue Skies: A tangible plan for what to do now, in 5 years, and 10 years. The University of Cambridge has published an ambitious plan for what short- and medium-term action must be taken for aviation to reach its 2050 goals of net zero emissions. In this session, we are taken through the contrails part of the plan, called Operation Blue Skies, with goals we need to reach this year, in five years, and ten years.
Matteo Mirolo, Head of Policy and Strategy Contrails, Breakthrough Energy
Paul Hodgson, Director AIA, University of Cambridge
16:35-17:00Presentation: The climate opportunity that no one knows about – the challenge of communicating contrails. Online, people are discussing the conspiracy theory of CHEMtrails much more than they are talking about the science of CONtrails. This is just one of the dilemmas with educating and communicating about contrails.
